The Renal Unit of KEM Hospital, started in 1969 as the first unit of its kind in Pune. It has since grown into a reputed centre for all investigations and treatments of Nephrology patients all over Maharashtra. The Unit offers the facilities of acute and maintenance haemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) and related therapies as well as renal transplantation, to a complete cross-section of the population. Our staff’s commitment to patient care is based on a team approach.
Beginning from 36 maintenance dialysis in 1972, today we do over 10,000 sessions annually and have approximately 50 patients on a regular programme.
Dialysis in Critically Ill AKI Patients
The Renal Unit has continued to extend all modalities of renal replacement therapy to critically ill renal patients including: Sustained Low Efficiency Daily Dialysis (SLEDD), Continuous Venovenous Hemofiltration (CVVH) and online hemodiafiltration with the 5008 machines.
Even critically ill septic patients without kidney injury have been treated with extracorporeal therapies such as plasma exchange and Polymyxin B direct hemoperfusion. The use of reverse osmosis, demineralization and ultrafiltration technologies has enabled us to obtain ultrapure water matching the stringent EU standards.
The Renal Unit has an active Kidney Transplant Programme with around 2-3 transplants performed every month. We successfully entered into the cadaver transplant field in 1997, with two of the first three such operations in Pune, performed at KEM Hospital.
We are also involved in various aspects of interventional nephrology including real time USG guided biopsies, cuffed tunneled catheter insertions, fistulograms, vascular access salvage and treatment of Central Vein Stenosis by percutaneous techniques.
Our research has included pioneering work such as research on cuffed tunneled catheters, hemolytic uremic syndrome and improving dry weight estimation using diagnostic ultrasound, which have won awards at the National and Zonal Conferences in 2008 and 2010.
Our Out Patient Department (OPD) Clinic caters to patients with all types of kidney conditions. More than 9000 patients avail our OPD facilities every year. Among other benefits, regular follow-up of chronic patients ensures timely intervention and smooth induction into the dialysis and transplant programmes.
