The Department of Paediatrics at KEM Hospital, strives for better child health through its work in various clinical, academic and research activities. One of our primary goals has been the reduction of Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) through improvement in the delivery of healthcare.
Special features of our department include: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), comprehensive rehabilitation services, and high risk follow-up clinics.
The Department of Paediatrics serves as a teaching unit for BJ Medical College, Pune and is recognised for DNB Paediatrics, DNB Neonatology, IAP Fellowships in Critical Care and Neonatology. Furthermore, we have been actively involved in research and in the Paediatric care of rural children.
The 40 bed Children’s Ward, with its colourful interior and playrooms, is a mother and child friendly unit with over 2,500 admissions per year, catering to the needs of sick children from all classes of society.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
A modern, state of the art NICU, accredited at Level III-A by the National Neonatology Forum of India, provides complete care ranging from routine to advanced; such as high dependency support, CPAP, high frequency ventilation and a neonatal transport system. The NICU at KEM Hospital has set a trend and changed the outcome for small premature babies and other high-risk neonates. KEM NICU is one of the handful neonatal units in India, recognised by National Board of Examinations, New Delhi for conducting the course of DNB (Neonatology). The Centre is also recognised for its Fellowship program in Neonatology by Indian Academy of Paediatrics and National Neonatology Forum, India.
Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
This unit was established in April 2000 as a 6 bed unit with state-of-the-art technical facilities such as piped oxygen, ventilation, monitoring and parenteral nutrition. It has now grown to 10 beds. Upgraded facilities such as multi para monitors, invasive monitoring, bedside point of care ultrasound, bedside continuous EEG, basic and advanced CRRT haemodialysis are available at the centre.
The unit is recognised for the post of MD / DNB. Special PICU training by the College of Paediatric Critical Care was started in 2007 (Paediatric Intensive Care Chapter of India – a subspecialty chapter of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics).
Gastroenterology and Liver Unit
This unit provides expert, comprehensive, multidisciplinary evaluation and management of all Paediatric gastrointestinal and liver conditions such as, Wilson's disease, neonatal cholestasis syndromes, celiac disease, etc. It has an international reputation as a leader in clinical care, research and fellowship training in Paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and clinical nutrition. The unit has been providing liver transplant services at reasonable costs, since 2015.
This is a referral centre for children with renal disorders from in and around Pune. Indoor services include facilities for acute Peritoneal Dialysis (PD), Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), haemodialysis, plasma exchange and initiation of continuous ambulatory PD. We work in tandem with Paediatric surgeons for management of children with urological disorders with special attention to the urinary bladder. We are one of 3 centres in the country to be recognised by the Diplomate National Board to initiate a 2-year fellowship program in Paediatric Nephrology.
A modern, comprehensive facility is run for the diagnosis and treatment of all Paediatric hormonal disorders in children such as growth disorders, thyroid disorders, pubertal disorders, childhood diabetes (especially Type 1 Diabetes), obesity and other Paediatric endocrine disorders; backed by state of art diagnostic facilities such as an advanced endocrine pathology laboratory, imaging facilities and other diagnostic modalities.
This unit offers diagnostic and therapeutic services to all Paediatric neurological conditions, both acute (ex. encephalitis, strokes, GBS) as well as chronic disorders (ex. developmental delay, neuroregression and neurodegeneration). Our unit is equipped with up-to date investigation facilities like neurophysiological tests (EEG, EMG, NCV and VEP), 3T MRI modality and special blood investigations. All rehabilitative services, if needed, are provided by the associated TDH Centre.
Paediatric Emergency Services
Specialised Paediatric Emergency services are available round the clock in the Paediatric Emergency Room. It is situated in proximity to the PICU and Children’s Ward, providing life-saving services under one roof.
Special Clinics and Camps
TDH Rehabilitation and Morris Child Development Centre
The first of its kind in the country, the centre is devoted to therapy of all kinds of developmental and behavioural disorders under one roof with an interdisciplinary team approach. Various facilities at the centre include IQ and behavioural testing, hearing assessment, speech therapy, occupational therapy, sensory integration and physiotherapy.
- Hearing impaired and speech disorders
- Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Learning disability and scholastic backwardness
- Early intervention in high risk neonates and fine motor and handwriting issues
- All aspects of cerebral palsy
- Other neurodevelopmental disorders such as Down syndrome
- Behavioural problems in children up to 18 years (including Adolescent counselling)
High Risk Follow-Up Clinic
A special follow up clinic for 'graduates' of NICU with emphasis on development and nutrition is run three times a week.
The special ‘BIG EARS’ project was added in 2006 and is the first of its kind in India with focus on early detection, diagnosis and therapy of hearing loss. Another area of focus, results from the premise that people with impaired hearing loss can learn to listen and talk. BIG EARS is the only centre in Maharashtra which offers all the services needed for the hearing impaired; from a variety of tests that detect hearing loss to hearing aids, speech therapy, counselling and cochlear implants for the totally deaf.
